This popular workshop provides an opportunity to focus on enhancing the photographer’s street photography skills. It is a chance to learn from a keen, skilled photographer in this fascinating genre.

Street photography is both a physical and a mental process that allows its practitioners to record the lives of people in their daily activities, both in their own cities and around the world. By developing skills and confidence in street photography, you can capture the soul or feeling of a city and enrich the historical record for both now and future generations.

The workshop is both practical and interactive. The focus is on developing skills and techniques to capture everyday scenes and enhance your images with simple yet effective post-processing workflows. Constructive feedback on your images is also an invaluable part of the program.

The Tutor: Chris Schultz

Chris is well known in the SAPF community as a street photographer who is very enthusiastic about his subject and generously shares his knowledge. He presents talks on the topic at numerous camera clubs and the SAPF Judging School. His enthusiasm for the topic stems from his desire to develop as a photographer, capturing life as it happens around him.

Chris is an SAPF Judge and judges at many clubs around Adelaide and for the Country Judging service. He is a former member and President of the Blackwood Photographic Club.

The Program

Saturday 5 September 2026 Session 1
Time: 12:15 – 1:45 pm
Location: Draper Room, Pilgrim Church, 12 Flinders Street, Adelaide

The workshop will commence with a talk covering the following aspects:

• Camera settings and lens choices

• Brief history of street photography

• Sources of inspiration

• Styles of street photography

• Composition

• Colour and/or monochrome

• Handling different lighting conditions

• Tips for working in the field

• Projects

• Legal aspects of street photography in Australia *

• Post-processing workflow

• An assignment for the field trip

Saturday 5 September 2026 Session 2
Time: 2:00 – 5:00 pm
Location: Rundle Mall and environs

After a short lunch break, we will use Rundle Mall to practise street photography. The challenge will be to create images that capture everyday people going about their daily activities, with an emphasis on making them interesting. Street portraits will be a part of the exercise as well.

Field Trip Requirements

• Suitable camera for capturing images

• If using an interchangeable-lens camera, a single focal-length lens in the 24-85 mm (full-frame) range is often better than a zoom lens. The latter may slow you down as well as make you more conspicuous

• Comfortable clothing and shoes (Hint: Try to be unobtrusive)

• Travel light (Leave the backpack at home)

• A mobile phone to allow the tutor to find and work with you

Time: 12:15 – 2:30 pm
Location: Draper Room, Pilgrim Church, 12 Flinders Street, Adelaide

Select 4 images for presentation/peer review from the practical session. Chris will lead a discussion of the images, offering helpful feedback and suggestions to consolidate your learning experience.

Cost

$100 per person. Participants are advised to bring their own lunch. Coffee, tea, and a light afternoon tea will be provided.
