Birds In Flight Photography Workshop 7 March 2025
This workshop provides an opportunity to focus on enhancing the photographer’s skills when capturing the beauty of birds in flight. It is an opportunity to be taught by a skilled photographer in this genre.
The workshop is both practical and interactive and is aimed at the intermediate and advanced photographer. The group is limited to 12 participants to allow for individual support during the practical session.
The Tutor: Bill Shields, MAPS
Bill is a successful bird photographer, winning multiple awards including the Barbara Mullins Digital Image of the Year 2023 in the SAPF Exhibition and 1st and 2nd place in the Australian Native Fauna Portraiture section in the same exhibition. In 2024 he obtained his MAPS honour from the Australian Photographic Society. He is an accredited SAPF Judge and speaks regularly to camera clubs on bird photography. He is currently President of the Tea Tree Gully Photography Club.
Requirements:
A camera with a lens that has a minimum focal length of 400 mm
Participants need to be able to shoot in manual mode using the exposure triangle and independently adjust all camera modes. The specific modes are outlined below.
A monopod or tripod if support is needed
Spare battery and plenty of room on the SD card.
USB so the tutor can give you copies of the handout
Comfortable clothing. Dress for the weather. Sometimes the ground may be muddy, so ensure you have appropriate shoes.
A mobile phone to allow the tutor to find and work with you

Part One
This session will cover recommendations for:
Exposure settings – aperture, shutter speed, ISO
Camera Modes – Metering mode, auto focus mode, drive mode, shadow and highlight warnings
Setting up the shot – Wind and sun, predictable flight paths, action, background separation, lighting matters, composition
Other – gear, tips, post processing, noise reduction, sharpening
Part Two
Practical photoshoot of birds
Location: Wyn Vale Dam, Park Lake Drive, Wyn Vale.
Time: 5.00-7.00 pm
Park in the Kindergarten Car Park.
If you have difficulty walking long distances, park on Shearwater Place near House number 15. It is a 30 metre walk to the shooting location.
Following the photoshoot, the Tutor invites you to join him for a casual meal at the Grove Tavern, Surrey Downs. The Tavern is 700 meters from the Kindergarten Car Park. Please indicate your interest in this by completing the appropriate field in your enrolment form. This will assist greatly with bookings.
Cost
$80 per person. Dinner and any other refreshments are at the participant’s own expense.
