Architecture at Night Workshop - 14 and 24 October 2026
This workshop is recommended for people who want to experience the joy of photographing architecture and cityscapes at night, when artificial lighting changes a building’s visual relationship to its environment and reveals a surprising range of colours.
In the field, we will demonstrate architectural photography techniques. In the follow-up debrief, we will review participants’ images and demonstrate processing methods.

Date and time: Wednesday 14 October, 6:00-8:30 pm.
Workshop meeting place
Meet at the southern end of the River Torrens Pedestrian Bridge. Please stay together as a group at all times.
During the workshop, we’ll work around the Casino building, the Intercontinental Hotel, and the Convention Centre. We will then cross to the north end of the bridge and work from the War Memorial Drive area.
Tutor: Robert Dettman, B Arch AFIAP AAPS CAPS/b
Robert is well known as a specialist in architectural photography. He has presented workshops in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and many camera clubs, as well as at the Australian Photographic Society Convention in 2018. He is an SAPF judge and, in 2022, presented a talk on ‘Judging Architecture’ at the SAPF Judging School.
Field trip requirements
A camera capable of taking a series of exposure bracketed shots in RAW.
A sturdy tripod is necessary.
Lens selection. Zoom lenses help you compose quickly when buildings and objects, like trees or street furniture, restrict your camera position. If you use primes, choose a range of focal lengths from wide to short telephoto.
A good general-purpose lens is a 24-70 mm zoom. Beyond that, anything between 24 and 200 mm is useful.
Travel light. Too much gear can be a distraction.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
Astronomical events:
Golden hour: 6:35 - 7:28 pm
Sunset: 7:28 pm, setting a little south of west.
Blue hour: 7:39 - 8:14 pm
Moon: The moon will be a crescent high in the west.
End civil twilight: 6:34 pm
End nautical twilight: 8:25 pm
End astronomical twilight: 8:56 pm
Because the light changes rapidly, you will have to work quickly to take advantage of a particular opportunity.
Date and time: Saturday 24 October, 12:30-2:30 pm.
The follow-up meeting will be at Gartrel Church Hall, Cnr Alexandra Avenue and 27A Prescott Terrace, Rose Park. Please prepare four images for peer review. We will also demonstrate post-processing techniques. Eat before the meeting or BYO lunch. We will provide tea, coffee, and light refreshments.
Cost: $100 per person. Participants pay for their own food and transportation to and from the venues. Participants are advised to eat before the meetings.
